Guest House in Málaga, Spain 2022
Creating a Unique Tile Panel for a Guest House in Málaga

Introduction

Our initial contact with the client was made after she saw our artwork for the sushi restaurant. She contacted us because she fell in love with the tile panel featuring mermaids, especially because one of the mermaids looked like the client’s late grandmother.

Project Sketch and Visiting the Site

Since the site is located in Spain, we decided to visit it in person. The accommodation was still under renovation. The client reserved a fountain with benches on each side to be completely filled with our tiles. Visiting the site ensured that we took the correct measurements and that our tile panel would fit perfectly when installed.

Sketch and Approval

Returning from Málaga, we started working on the sketch. As soon as the sketch was approved by the client, we started painting the tile panel. We decided to use rustic tiles for this project and to paint most of the tile panel monochromatic. We used only other colors to represent the main elements and some birds, given that the client has a profound love for these creatures. All of the birds selected can be found in Málaga’s natural environment.

Artistic Technique and Design Elements

The tile panel turned out to be a fusion between two different techniques: traditional Portuguese tiles and scientific illustration. The original mermaids, painted for a sushi restaurant, featured Japanese details, such as tattoos. As the client had lived in Japan, she decided to keep those details. The mermaids playing violin were the focal point of the design.

Surprises and Personal Touches

While designing the personalized tile panel, we decided to include some surprises. Inside the fountain, we painted Koi fish scientifically illustrated, adding their shadows to make them look real. We also added painted roses in the benches, a gift for the mermaids playing violin.

Finishing Touches and Delivery

Before finalizing the tile panel, we painted an additional panel to be installed next to the mermaids, a music sheet with a nightingale. We delivered the tile panel ourselves, as we’re not far from Málaga, facilitating its installation and also guaranteeing its safety during the trip. The installation process was complex due to the curved surfaces of the fountain, but with our help we guaranteed an impeccable result.

Anticipation for the Final Look

While the guest house is still under renovation, we’re eager to see photographs once everything is cleaned and decorated with plants. In this project, we created a tile panel that represents not only a shared artistic vision but also afusion of tradition, surprises and personal touches.
