Religious Monument in Anadia, Portugal 2020
Creating a Religious Artwork for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Introduction
We were invited to create a religious artwork that would represent the Assumption of the Virgin Mary for the exterior of a church in Anadia, Portugal. Inspired by the image of the Virgin Mary ascending in the sky in a mantle of roses, we elaborated a design for a religious artwork that would elevate the representation of the roses.

Inspiration and Concept
This vision led us to the creation of a ceramic rose, a ceramic tile with embossing. This rose would cover the grave completely, elevating the scenery of the assumption represented in the religious artwork. For the tile panel, we decided to experiment with a new technique. The Virgin Mary, instead of only being painted, would be drawn with ceramic pencil, creating the idea that the Virgin is no longer physically present. This detail added depth and symbolism to the monument.

Sculpting the Rose

The creation of this ceramic element was a meticulous process. First, we sculpted a clay model of the rose, then we used it as a cast. This cast helped us guarantee that the reproduction of this piece was precise, with consistency and detail in every piece.

Additional Ceramic Panel

Next to this monument, we created another ceramic panel representing also the same theme. For this artwork, we used only the ceramic roses. However, instead of inserting them in a tile panel,we decided that the main piece would be the sculpture of the arms and face of the Virgin Mary of Ephesus, Turkey. This sculpture added a historical and emotional depth to this religious artwork.

The Ceramic Roses and Their Potential
While working on this project, we got to realize the potential of the ceramic pieces we had created. These pieces can be incorporated in modern projects, with different combinations of colors, adding something fresh and contemporary in a religious artwork or any other kind of tile panel.

The Monument in Anadia

The monument is installed in Anadia, a tribute to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The combination of the narrative, the ceramic pencil, and the ceramic roses turned this religious artwork into something unique. We reflect about the possibilities of tiles and ceramics for contemporary sites.
